Blu-ray was developed to enable recording of high definition video and increase storage capacity on a single unit. Blu-ray uses a blue-violet laser to read and write data, this laser technology has shorter wavelengths (405nm) than the DVD format (650nm) and thus makes it possible for increased storage capacity on the same available physical space as a DVD.
